Emerging sports association, the Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GMMAF) has thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as well as the National Sports Commission, for affording the entity the opportunity to participate in the National Sports Awards despite being only two years in existence.
This was disclosed by a release from the entity. According to the correspondence, president of the association, Gavin Singh, said, “This approval and valuable commitment towards the Development of Mix Martial Arts has been recognized and supported by this respected body brings tremendous importance for the federation and athletes.”
Despite its infancy as a sports association, the GYMMAF has participated in a World Championship and Pan American Games, the latter of which witnessed the acquisition of historic two silver medals. The aforementioned success has resulted in the submission of Carl Ramsay, Sheenese Bobb, Troy Bobb and Dr. Sawan Jagnarin, as nominees for the positions of Sportsman, Sportswoman, Coach, and Official of the Year respectively.
“Since, the initiation of the GMMAF in Guyana, they have participated in the World Championships and the Pan American Games; where two silver medalists were achieved by the Guyanese athletes. Additionally, the GMMAF was invited to promotional events in Trinidad, St Martin, and Columbia where the intercontinental meet was held. The latter three were not met due to financial constraints“, Singh expounded.
According to Singh, “However, this hasn’t stopped the GMMAF to persevere. They have added their participation in the 2022 world championships for the IMMAF in Serbia, Europe. The private sector has already invested to see this a reality. Notwithstanding, the constant training of the local MMA athletes who are determined to represent Guyana internationally, the acknowledgment of the National Sports Commission to have the GMMAF participate is a step forward towards achievement. Thus we are excited to participate on the way forward.”
Singh commended entities such as Beharry Restaurant Holdings under its KFC brand, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Zoon Incorporated and Eureka Laboratory for their invaluable contributions to the association, as corporate partners in the advancement of the discipline.
