A Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice man died and three others were injured after the driver of a Tacoma vehicle rammed into a crowd at a wedding house in the village around 1 am today.
Dead is Somdatt Indal, also known as “Fats”, 51 of Lot 1178 Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice.
Injured are Dion Kistan, 11, Levon Reace, and one other person. As of this morning, the trio remained at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Kistan had to undergo emergency surgery. He reportedly sustained massive injuries to both his legs.
According to information gathered, Indal was at a wedding house in Canefield at the time of his demise.
Stabroek News was told that a young man at the wedding house and several others were involved in an argument when the young man phoned his cousin, a contractor, who arrived in his Tacoma vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that the vehicle bore the sign of N&S Contracting.
After the cousin reportedly got involved in the argument, some of the persons at the location attempted to block his vehicle when he drove into a crowd of people hitting those who were not involved in the issue.
Kistan, who visited Canefield to spend the weekend with his grandmother, and his uncle were riding through the area at the time when they were struck, while Indal was standing at a distance.
The two others were reportedly also standing at a distance.
After ramming his way out, the driver fled the scene leaving the now deceased and injured persons lying on the roadway.
The three injured persons were picked up by relatives and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, while Indal was eventually transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
As of this morning efforts were being made to locate the driver, Stabroek News was told.
