Vryheid businessman remanded over attempted murder of ex-partner

A Vryheid, West Canje Berbice businessman was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the attempted murder of his ex-partner who sustained three chop wounds to her head and one to her right arm during an attack.

Khemdatt Krishna Persaud, 55, of Lot 40 Vryheid Village appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh where he was charged with attempting to murder Deoranie Badal also known as “Marcy”, 36.

The man was not required to enter a plea to the charge and was remanded to prison.

He will return to the Whim Magistrate’s Court on February 18 for report.

Badal also known as “Marcy”, 36, a manager at a company on the Corentyne, and of Number 56 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was attacked on Sunday around 1.10 pm.

According to information gathered, the woman was at the Jamrock Wash Bay when Persaud, who she ended a relationship with some three months ago, arrived and exited a motor car allegedly with a cutlass and walked up to her vehicle.

Stabroek News was told that in an effort to protect herself the woman exited the vehicle and attempted to make a run for it but the suspect grabbed on to her and dealt her several chops.

A police constable who was present at the wash bay then intervened and rushed the victim to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. She was then transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and subsequently to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

She sustained three wounds to her head and one to her right hand. The court yesterday heard that her condition remains critical.
