Cheaper and inferior products are forcing changes in the consumer market

Dear Editor,

Whenever I’m dealing with installation of solar system, surveillance system (camera), or electrical installation, based on what’s available here, I always advise my clients where to make purchases based on quality and prices. Along the line, I’ve written of my experiences with the intention of educating others of moving in the right direction and even go so far as to mention the names of stores. Based on the system here, I’ve found it way better to buy certain stuff from America and ship it in. It all adds up to better quality, price and acquiring the latest model. Regardless of whatever one is purchasing, most online shopping agents charge between 100-150% the cost of the item, which is very sad. In addition, most of the products available here are outdated, all because the stores would have to cushion the bills to ship back and replace.

Editor, in addition to installation, I’m also contracted to service or repair equipment and most computerized systems have a CMOS battery that store password, time, settings etc., so whenever there’s no power, the battery produces back-up power to save the settings. As I mentioned before, these batteries are also used in some types of blood pressure testing instruments, and some use regular batteries, the double or triple ‘A’ batteries. Some of these batteries die after a time, and I would normally recommend where to make purchases locally. I do that based on numerous experiences. Many stores are flooded with inferior batteries and when used, the equipment wouldn’t work which cause some to hastily blame me for making them buying inferior products, or the battery would work only for a few hours or days.

One equipment malfunctioned Mon-day, and I ventured into the ACME building on Regent Street to make a purchase, because over the years, I’ve made numerous purchases there. Any type of battery could be found there and of the best quality. To my dismay, I discovered the business was closed and the building rented out for other types of business. That one store I knew from small – going to get my pictures taken, view cameras, telescopes, print pictures using the various types of storage media, retouch damage pictures etc. Throughout the years, I’ve never had an issue with their service or staff. It makes me wonder if the inferior and cheaper products caused them to shut their doors. I will surly miss ACME Photo Studio.

Sincerely,

Sahadeo Bates
