The charges of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), got their first taste of competitive action for the 2023 season on Sunday with a 15s match in the National Park.
In the encounter, the Vice-President’s XV thumped the President’s XV 23-nil in a one-sided affair.
Panthers’ Godfrey Broomes helped the Vice-President’s side to the sweeping victory by recording eight points. Broomes opened the scoring by opting to take a shot at goal from a penalty, 40 metres from the try line. After nailing the penalty goal, Kevin Wills bullied his way past the porous defense of the President’s XV on the brink of half time, leaving the score 8-0.
Lionel Holder further enhanced the dominance of the Vice-President’s XV by evading the defense to open the scoring in the second half of the match.
Broomes, who was eventually named Most Valuable Player, then scored a try to take the tally to 18-nil.
Phibian Joseph then sealed the game on the final whistle, when he barreled his way through the defensive line-up leaving the game at 23-0 in favour of the Vice-President’s XV.
Scintillating rugby will continue next Sunday in the National Park from 16:00hrs.
