The official fixtures for the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets, East Bank/West Demerara edition, which kicks-off on Friday at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, was officially released yesterday.
This was confirmed by tournament coordinator Shavaine Ghent, the lone female coordinator in the tournament’s history.
According to Ghent, “The previous edition was staged in 2019 where 34 teams participated inclusive of the playoffs.
We would have also crowned a new champion in that tournament and this is now the 6th edition. In terms of the playoffs, it was commendable to see the participation of the teams as well as the spectators which could only bode well for this event and the future. We expect a large turnout to descend on the venue to support the competition given the three year absence.”
She added, Showstoppers is the most successful winning three titles in five final’s appearances. The other two winners are inaugural champion West Side Ballers and current holders Brothers United. This year will also be historic as the defending champion opted not to participate due to their players having work commitments. Interestingly, we have never crowned a winner from the East Bank but have had several losing finalists.”
“This year, the eight losing teams from the opening night will progress to the Plate section which is historic. However, any team that fails to participate will be suspended for three years from the tournament,” Ghent said.
The main draw of the championship commences on Friday at the same venue. The other match days are February 11th and 17th. The event will utilize an elimination format. Below features the complete list of fixtures.
