The driver of the car involved in last Sunday’s Hopetown, West Coast Berbice accident which injured two persons and sparked unrest, has since been placed on $100,000 bail.
The father of the driver who was arrested following the accident after he allegedly verbally abused the police ranks has been placed on $25,000 bail.
Commander of Region Six, Kurleigh Simon yesterday confirmed the bail for both men and stressed that a file is near completion to be sent for advice as it relates to the accident.
Residents in Hopetown, West Coast Berbice last Sunday evening torched the driver’s Mazda RX8 car on the main public road after it was involved in the accident.
According to a statement from the force, around 5.26 pm on Sunday, a 19-year-old of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, went to the Fort Wellington Police Station and reported that a few minutes earlier, he was driving a motor car, PNN 1801 on the Hopetown Public Road, “when two men on pedal cycle rode in front of him, causing him to collide with one of the men.”
The statement noted that he claimed that moments later, a crowd gathered at the scene and persons present robbed him of his iPhone Pro Max and one gold chain.
The car was subsequently torched at the location.
Simon yesterday said that the investigation into the torching of the vehicle was being fully investigated, adding, that action will be taken against person(s) found responsible.
Injured in the collision were a 22-year-old, who is a serving member of the Guyana Defence Force, and a 14-year-old pedal cyclist.
They were both taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where the 14-year-old was treated and sent away, while the 22-year-old was referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he remains a patient.
His sister yesterday noted that he underwent a CT scan and they were waiting on doctors to read the results. She added that her brother remembers exactly what transpired and told them that he was in the corner on his electric scooter when he was struck by the car.
According to his sister, he sustained injuries to his head, face and body. She said at this stage they are hoping that he is able to make a full recovery.
