The League `B’ clash of the Concacaf Nations League between Guyana and Montserrat, which was scheduled for the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora on March 28th, has now been shifted to the Wildey Turf Stadium, Wildey, Barbados.
This was confirmed by an official release from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
“The decision to move the match from Guyana to Barbados was approved by Concacaf following a thorough review of facilities here, including the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora,” the release from the GFF stated.
GFF General Secretary Ian Alves in a letter to the regional confederation explained that the playing surface at the Leonora facility is in poor condition.
“The stadium authorities have recently treated the grass for infestation, which makes it possibly injurious to the health of players. This situation would have to be monitored and evaluated in a few weeks to ascertain the reduction or total removal of this threat,” the letter added.
Guyana currently sits second in the group with six points, trailing leaders Haiti by four points. Montserrat occupies the cellar position on three points. Guyana is also set to face Bermuda, who sit on four points, on March 24th. Alves confirmed that the Bermudians have expressed an interest in hosting the fixture. Guyana must win both of their matches to stand a chance of qualifying for the 2023 Gold Cup.
