Special education teachers take on chess

A total of 17 Special Education teachers met at the David Rose Special School in West Ruimveldt on Friday, February 3 to compete in a grand chess tournament. In addition to the host David Rose School, participants came from the New Amsterdam and Diamond Special Needs schools, the Linden Centre for Special Children and the Schoonord Centre for Children with Diverse Needs.

Upon resumption of their duties, the participating teachers of the tournament are expected to impart their knowledge of the game to students.

Placing first was Roumelia Seer-Daniels, Deputy Headmistress of the David Rose School who scored three victories in as many games. Second was Karlina Prakash-Phillips, also of David Rose, with Tineisha Isaacs of New Amsterdam third.

The tournament was hosted by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in association with the Ministry of Education. It was organised by Sabine McIntosh, Managing Director of the Guyana Deaf Association who also heads the Special Needs Committee of the GCF.

President of the GCF Anand Raghunauth congratulated McIntosh for organising the tournament and entrusted the participating teachers to be on the lookout for chess talent in their schools. Anaya Lall, a deaf chess player, represented Guyana at the FIDE 44th Olympiad in India last year. The GCF expressed its thanks to the Beacon Foundation for providing lunches for the occasion.
