As telecommunications company Digicel Guyana celebrates its 16th Anniversary it has made donations to three non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Digicel Guyana started off its 16th anniversary celebration by aiming to make 16 of its customers millionaires. So far, 14 customers have won themselves one million dollars each with two more millionaires to be crowned.

To continue the celebration, Digicel’s staff teamed up and donated essential ítems to three NGOs. In a release yesterday, the company said it has a longstanding commitment to supporting those in need and making a positive impact in the community. The donations were made to Gifted Hands Special Needs School, The Least of These Foundation, and The Open Door Community Alliance of Tiger Bay.

Gifted Hands Special Needs School received laptops for the teachers, tablets for the students, a Samsung Smart TV, and stationery. The release said that the staff members of the school expressed their gratitude for the donation

“We have had a longstanding relationship with Digicel, and we appreciate their continued support,” Marcia Smith, founder of the Gifted Hands school was quoted as saying.

The Least of These Foundation, which works to bring relief to underserved communities, including Venezuelan migrants had reached out to Digicel for assistance to purchase furniture to facilitate English classes for children of the migrants.

During a visit, a quantity of furniture, whiteboards, backpacks, and stationery were handed over to the foundation.

“This is more than what we bargained for, we are so blessed and thankful for this donation as it will go a very long way in helping us with our work. Such a heartfelt thank you, Digicel,” Sharon James, Project Coordinator of The Least of These Foundation was quoted as saying.

Digicel has also collaborated with The Open Door Community Alliance of Tiger Bay to support children’s education. During their first visit, Digicel provided laptops to help children access digital resources for their after-school and in-class lessons. The release said that in response to an urgent need, Digicel staff visited the community a second time to distribute stationery and backpacks to the children. This initiative has helped bridge the digital divide and provided essential learning resources to children in Tiger Bay.

Simone Pierre, Chief Commercial Officer emphasised that “Digicel will continue collaborating with NGOs or individuals who are passionate about community development”.
