At a special ceremony Sunday night at the La France Restaurant, Charlotte Street, boxer Keevin Allicock was honoured by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) for being an Olympian.
However, the GBA did not stop there but they also made a presentation of a quantity of equipment to the U16 Guyana Schoolboys Boxing Team as well as launch the Patrick Ford Memorial championships billed for later this month.
Bantamweight boxer Allicock became the first Guyanese in 25 years to participiate at the Olympics when he fought at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
The last boxer to compete at the Olympic Games was John Douglas who competed at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Allicock received a plaque from the GBA for his sterling contribution to the sport.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, said yesterday that the plaque to Allicock was a reward in recognition of Allicock’s efforts in the ring where he is the current national champion and is also world ranked.
Ninvalle also said that the U16 team received a quantity of gear on behalf of overseas-based Guyanese Dr. Lambert.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle said that the GBA’s Patrick Ford Memorial championships will commence February 19th at the National Gymnasium. He added that the event will attract boxers from Barbados, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and St Lucia.
