Bring law and order to Dennis Street, Sophia

Dear Editor,

Ministers of Local Government and Public Works, Nigel Dharamlall and Juan Edghill, I bring to your attention a situation which has been developing over the past few years and which has now reached a totally unacceptable point. And this is the encumbrance of the Dennis Street which is now grinding traffic to a halt during peak hours.

This road services the entire Sophia and Cummings Lodge areas as well as other communities along the East Coast. Thousands of commuters thus use this road on a daily basis. The completion of the excellent stretch of road between UG and Dennis Street has brought in even further traffic from further up the East Coast.

Over the past two years illegal structures and vending has encompassed almost the entire stretch of Dennis Street. How this was allowed to happen under the nose of a government which has publicly stated a zero tolerance to illegal vending and encumbrance of government reserves is an absolute mystery. The inevitable chaos and congestion which follows such illegal vending has now gotten so bad that a stretch of road a few hundred meters long takes an inordinately long time (oftentimes over an hour) to navigate during peak hours.

Vehicles stop haphazardly to make purchases with little or no concern for the other road users. Magnify this by the multiple number of stalls along this road and you will realize the absolute chaos which exists. We, the lawful citizens of this country, are entitled to proper use of the infrastructure on which billions are spent to develop. Could you please use your high offices to bring some law and order to Dennis Street?

Sincerely,

M. Abraham
