Says Charwayne Walker
Discarded West Indies batsman, left- hander Darren Bravo added his name to an illustrious list of Regional players with centuries in each Innings at the Regional first-class level recently.
Bravo became only the third Trinidadian to achieve the feat following in the footsteps of Gerry Gomez (deceased) and Michael ‘’Joey’’ Carew (deceased). Playing against the Leeward Islands at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium ground in the second round of this year’s four-day competition, the flamboyant stroke maker put the hosts to the sword with an even 100 in Trinidad & Tobago’s first Innings. In the second Innings he scored an unbeaten 100 to enter the record books.
One would have to go back to 1947 to find the first person to achieve the feat, Jamaican Allan Rae (also deceased), who scored centuries in each innings, 111 and 128 against Barbados at Sabina Park.
The late Gerry Gomez 148 and 110 not out against the then British Guiana at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground in 1953 and Joe Solomon 107 and 100 not out against Trinidad & Tobago again at GCC Bourda, in 1964 came next. Another great, the late Guyana and West Indies opening batsman Roy Fredericks scored 127 and 115 against Barbados at the GCC, Bourda ground in 1967.
Michael `Joey’ Carew (deceased) not only scored two centuries but also took a five wicket haul.
Carew scored 164 and 101 against Jamaica at the Queen’s Park Oval ground in 1970 and took 5 for 28 in Jamaica’s second Innings.
Others to score a century in each innings are Stuart Williams 160 and 114 against Trinidad & Tobago at Guaracara Park 2001; Chris Gayle 131 and 150 against the Leeward Islands at Alpart Sports Club ground in 2005; Ryan Hinds 168 and 150 against the Leeward Islands in St Thomas in 2006; Brenton Parchment who scored 111 and 168 not out against Trinidad & Tobago at Alpart Sports Club in 2007; Devon Smith who scored 139 and 106 not out against the Combined Campuses and Colleges at the Beausejour Stadium Gros Islet, St Lucia in 2013 and Devon Smith who scored 107 not out and 154 against Jamaica at Windsor Park, Roseau Dominica in 2017.
