Dear Editor,
Now that we Guyanese are rich from oil funds for a few years, it is time for our own national cricket team. You are hearing me clearly saying dump the West Indies Cricket team for the sake of nourishing and fostering our own talent.
Let us start with building a world class cricket academy employing world class coaching that will result in top-notch county or major towns cricket competition. As an old boy of Saints, we had our own cricket ground producing high quality cricketers who were stymied by regional politics that the “poor” Guyana accepted what allotment the other countries of the region handed out. However, we had some smart guys that took up Kerry Packer’s offer to make money and showcase their talents despite being blacklisted. Imagine if they had access to today’s oil money…!
Lastly, if you don’t know investing in sports teams provides handsome returns and lots of well-paying jobs. Moreover, some teams even trade as Public Companies on stock exchanges.
Yours faithfully,
Keith Bernard
