Ann’s Grove dumped West Demerara heavyweight Slingerz FC out of the East Coast Mash Cup Football Championship, prevailing 1-0 in their semi-final encounter last evening at the Golden Grove Community Centre ground to seal a place in tomorrow’s final.
It was a moment of individual brilliance from Shamar Beckles that settled the outcome in the latter stages of the second half. Witnessed by a large crowd, Beckles latched onto a long ball, before dribbling his marker and firing into the back of the net from inside the penalty box.
It was the first loss for the West Demerara side under Golden Jaguars assistant-coach Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard. Ann’s Grove will now await the winner of the Pouderoyen and Golden Grove encounter. Up to press time, the latter was in control at 2-0 at the start of the second half which commenced after the scheduled time.
The winner of the tournament will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, whilst the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will collect $250,000, $150,000, and $100,000 respectively, and the corresponding accolade.
