Teen athletes with aspirations of representing Guyana at this year’s CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas will have their first opportunity to punch their tickets when the National Sports Commission (NSC) Junior League is staged this weekend.
Athletes are scheduled to get into the blocks at the National Track and Field Centre from 10:00hrs tomorrow and Sunday. The trials will be used to select Guyana’s team for the 50th edition of the event. This year, the annual fixture will return to the Bahamas where the Thomas Robinson Stadium will host from April 7 to April 10.
Standout local junior athletes will be eager to reach or surpass the qualifying standards set by the AAG in order to compete among the Region’s best in the 242 during the Easter weekend. The trials should be highly competitive as there are several rivalries among the nation’s teen track and field stars.
Tianna Springer, Attoya Harvey, Javon Roberts, Eron Leitch, Ezekiel Newton, Ezekiel Saul and Duel Europe are among the standout athletes who have enjoyed early season success in the track and in the field so far and should highlight this weekend’s activities.
According to President of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson, he expects in excess of 100 athletes competing for spots on the team. Below are the standards set by the AAG for the athletes to punch their tickets to the Bahamas.
