An Upper Corentyne woman is now hospitalized in a serious condition after her husband allegedly threw a kerosene stove on her during an argument over a cellphone on Wednesday evening.
Around 7 pm, Edward Sukhu also known as “Paul”, 47, an operator, and his wife Zeena Harripaul also known as “Lovita”, 40, a part-time worker were involved in an argument over a cell phone at their Number 69 Village, Corentyne, home.
According to a police report, Sukhu was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, while Harripaul was cooking on a kerosene stove in the kitchen located in the lower flat of their house.
The couple’s son, Joshua Sukhu, 20, a construction worker, reported to investigators that the argument quickly became heated. He said, during the argument his mother turned away backing his father when the man suddenly picked up the lit stove and threw it on the woman.
The kerosene reportedly spilled out onto the woman’s hair and clothing which quickly caught fire. The fire was eventually put out by Joshua who doused his mother with water.
Sukhu while attempting to escape slipped and became unconscious after hitting his head.
An alarm was raised and neighbours assisted Joshua in rushing both his parents to the Skeldon Public Hospital.
Harripaul was admitted in a stable condition while Sukhu has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
The woman reportedly sustained burn injuries to her back, both ears, and the right side of her face. Her son, who rescued her, was also treated for minor burns on his right hand, arm, abdomen, and leg.
