The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) can now add 13 new recruits to its roster after they completed a four-month Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) at the Prison Training Centre at Timehri.
This information was disclosed in a GPS release yesterday. It added that the recruits were drawn from Swan Village, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, St. Cuthbert’s Mission, and Lethem and obtained training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the job.
According to the release, at the graduation ceremony held on Friday, February 10, Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, welcomed the new recruits to the GPS. He told them that the prison environment is very complex and multi-dimensional, and ranks are expected to execute their tasks in a very effective manner. Further, the recruits will be transferred to the various prison locations and as such, Elliot urged them to acquaint themselves with the peculiarities of the different prisons as there are significant differences at the various locations.
“It is important that you become aware of the conditions at each location in advance of your posting so as to facilitate an easier adaptation process”, he advised. The Prison Head also charged the recruits with ensuring that the inalienable rights of the prisoners are not trampled during their period of incarceration. He reminded them to be vigilant in this regard, noting that what takes place in prison takes place outside the view of the general public.
Elliot also mentioned that the graduating class demonstrated the services’ commitment to diversifying the work environment.
Brief remarks were also delivered by Deputy Director of Prisons Kevin Pilgrim, who gave an overview of the training course.
Among the attendees at the graduation ceremony were members of the recruitment board, Michele Baptiste and Eureka Duncan along with Staff Welfare Officer Grace Roberts.
