The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) says that contrary to reports in the press it has not commenced the registration of electric bikes, electric cycles and electric golf carts presently traversing the roads of the country.
In notice in yesterday’s Stabroek News, the GRA said that discussions are being pursued between it, the Guyana Police Force and other sister agencies in relation to the requirements for importation, registration, licensing (rider and vehicle), and related liability insurance for these types of vehicles.
The GRA said that it will notify the public of these requirements within the near future. It did not say where these erroneous reports had appeared but the police force itself has been advising about registering for electric bikes.
In a post on its Facebook page yesterday, the police said that in keeping with the new regulations of registering and acquiring licences for E-bikes, Police ranks in Region 4’C’ have launched a sensitization campaign to educate operators of these bikes about the new regulations and process.
As a result, the post said that on Friday, February 17, 2023, Sergeant Scott met with several owners of electronic bikes and informed them that soon they would have to get a valid driver’s license to operate the bikes. He also advised them that the bikes must be registered with the GRA.
Sergeant Scott also advised them that since a motorcycle licence is now needed to operate said bikes, they should not allow persons and children under the age of 16 to operate the bikes on the roadways.
There have been growing concerns about the operation of these bikes in light of a series of fatal accidents.
