Former West Indies and Guyana captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan is once again back as chairman of selectors of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), the territorial board announced yesterday as a decision made at an Executive meeting.
Sarwan had previously functioned in the role prior to being named as a member of the West Indies selector, a role he held for five months prior to his resignation in May, 2022. On the local side of things, Sarwan was replaced by Rabindranauth Seeram who held the post since May, 2022.
According to the GCB, Sarwan signaled an intention to serve in cricket administration and “consequently, Seeram has been reassigned to the Cricket Development Unit of the GCB.”
Notably, the Seeram-led selection panel, comprising of Berbice’s Albert Smith who also doubles down as the Guyana Harpy Eagles manager, Demerara’s Peter Persaud and Essequibo’s Elroy Stephney, who has since been replaced by Norwayne Fredericks, came under scrutiny when the Harpy Eagles team was announced for the first two-rounds of the West Indies Championship. Scrutiny also came from Sarwan who critiqued the exclusion of Antony Adams.
During his playing career, Sarwan scored 5842 runs in 87 Tests with a best of 291 at an average of 40. In 181 One Day Internationals, he also scored 5804 runs with five tons to his name and an average of 42.6. The right hander has scored over 13000 first-class runs with 33 centuries under his belt along with 56 wickets.
The GCB indicated that they “expect that Sarwan will continue to build on the positive steps taken during his last tenure as Chairman of the Senior Selection Committee of the GCB.”
