The Skeldon Post Office is in a “deplorable and disgusting” condition, APNU+AFC Councillor for Region Six, Shurla Scott told the Regional Democratic Council last week.
According to her, seniors when visiting the location to uplift their pensions would have to test the strength of the floor boards before standing in hopes of not falling through.
According to Scott, she raised the issue in 2022 but nothing was done. However, at the RDC’s statutory meeting last week, she said, “I stood in anguish this week when I passed because I literally saw our seniors testing the floor to identify the stronger boards.”
She relayed, that upon investigating she discovered that the last time the building was rehabilitated was in 2013 at a cost of $13M.
“I cannot ignore the condition that is there having our seniors every single month, I believe that one day we would hear that those pensioners literally pass through that floor”, she asserted.
She then pleaded with the council to intervene so as to have works carried out.
Regional Chairman, David Armogan, noted that he is aware of the condition of the Skeldon location and added that there is a similar situation at the Whim Post Office, while another councilor noted that the Eversham Post Officer is also in need of repairs.
Armogan said, “So I will direct these to the relevant agencies to ensure that they can do some work to bring some relief to the people who are using these facilities especially the older people.”
