The Flying Ace Cycling Club will host its annual Republic Day (Mashramani) 50-mile road race today in New Amsterdam with the country’s best riders expected to be on show.
This is the first time the event will be sponsored by De Peoples Pawn Shop and Money When You Need It Most and will see riders approaching the starting line for a 10.00 hours ride off.
The wheelsmen will assemble in front of Rainbow Beer Garden, Republic Road and Charles Place before turning into Vryheid Street and then into Main Street. The riders will then make their way into Tacama Turn before heading back onto Republic Road. This will be done 12 times in the Open, Veterans and Juniors’ categories while the female riders will do one lap.
There will be 10 prime prizes at $1,000 each while the winner of the Open Category will pocket $50,000. Second place, third place and fourth will take home $45,000, $35,000 and $30,000 respectively while fifth place will cart off with $25,000 and sixth place settling for $20,000.
The top three juniors will be rewarded $25,000, $20,000 and $15,000 while the top three Veterans will get $15,000, $13,000 and $12,000.
According to race organizer and president of Flying Ace Cycling Club, Randolph Roberts, “I’m happy to get this race underway, this is the first of the 2023 season and I want to thank the sponsors for their contribution. I think this race is a must-see because of the amount of talented riders expected to be part of the event, not only from Berbice, but in the country.”
Among the riders anticipated to come out are Romello Crawford, Andre ‘Padlock’ Greene, Briton John, Jamaul John, Aaron Newton, Robin Persaud, Alex Mendes, Curtis Dey, Alexander Leung, Warren McKay among others.
