Dear Editor,
In media reports on February 23rd, 2023, President Ali claims that Guyana received an extension for EITI report that is due for the fiscal year 2020. However, on the EITI website, https://eiti.org/countries/guyana, Guyana’s status is listed as “Suspended for missing deadline”, if as President Ali claims, an extension has now be given, why is Guyana’s current EITI status suspended? Additionally, if one looks at the EITI board decisions, see https://eiti.org/register-board-decisions, the latest one is from Feb 1st, 2023 and for Guyana it states, “Guyana is not eligible for an extension of the reporting deadline”, see here: https://eiti.org/ board-decision/2022-64 .
One should also note that the EITI decision was on Feb 1st, 2023 but the official notification was transmitted on Feb 17th, 2023 to Government of Guyana. Thus if the EITI internal decisions take about 17 days to reach the government, how did President Ali receive such a quick notification of an extension especially given that it is not listed on the EITI website?
Yours faithfully,
