A man has been sentenced to prison while his co-accused was set free after they were busted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) for possession of cannabis.
Chaterpaul Singh, 39, also called ‘Dutchie’, of First Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and his co-accused Anesia Isfehani, 24, of Crown Dam, Industry, ECD, both appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where the joint charge was read to them.
The narcotic charge brought against the duo states that on February 21 at Norton Street, Georgetown, they had in their possession 1.542 kilogrammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
In court, Singh pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $1,387,800. Isfehani pleaded not guilty and the charge was eventually withdrawn against her.
According to a CANU release, their officers acting on information received, intercepted a motor vehicle bearing registration number PHH 9387 on Norton Street where Chatterpaul was seen in the driver’s seat while Isfehani was also an occupant of the said vehicle.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of three brick-like parcels suspected to be cannabis. Both accused were subsequently taken to CANU headquarters along with the suspected narcotics which later tested positive for cannabis. It was weighed and amounted to 1.542 kilogrammes (3.3 pounds) with a street value of $500,000.
