The Nigerian man who the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) had tracked down based on a package that his accomplice was trying to mail through the Guyana Post Office (GPO), was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment after admitting to the charge.
Gift Obioha, 26, of Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown made his appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with the offence of aiding to traffic narcotics on February 22.
Obioha pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to four years behind bars and ordered to pay a fine of $723,000.
According to CANU, their officers were on duty at the GPO when they intercepted a male Nigerian who was identified as 33-year-old Michael Emmanuel Ude of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara. He was attempting to mail a box containing several items. An inspection of the box and its contents led to the discovery of a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine.
Ude and the substance were taken to CANU headquarters, where tests showed it was cocaine with a weight of 482 grammes, and a street value of $400,000. Further investigations led to the arrest of Obioha.
As of yesterday no charge had been laid against Ude.
