Briton John continued his dominance on the local circuit by winning the Flying Ace Cycling Club Republic Day 50-mile road race on Thursday.
The United We Stand wheelsmen led the 22-man race, which was sponsored by De People’s Pawn Shop and Money When You Need It Most, around New Amsterdam from the get-go and broke away in a one-man platoon to stop the clock at one hour, 27 minutes and 30 seconds (01.27.30s).
The race pedaled off from Rainbow Beer Garden on Republic Road and Charles Place with the riders turning onto Vryheid Street. They then headed into Main Street and made their way into Tacama Turn before finishing at Republic Road.
John was so dominant that he copped all 25 sprint primes.
Jamaul John settled for second while Curtis Dey finished third. Rounding off the top six were Robin Persaud, Romello Crawford and Christopher Griffith. Persaud also secured the first place in the Veterans’ category with Alex Mendes and Kwame ‘Keyman’ Ridley finishing second and third respectively. There were no female riders taking part in the event but the juniors’ division was won by Aaron Newton with Alex Leung copping the runner-up position.
According to race organizer, Randolph Roberts, the race was a successful one and he wanted to thank the riders for coming out and the sponsors for investing in the sport.
The sponsors also said that the event was a success and pledged to return next year.
