Dear Editor,
On Saturday, 25th February, I was travelling down Vlissingen road and noticed that garbage – most likely from the Mashramani celebrations – was still strewn around; almost 48 hours since the celebrations concluded. This is in stark contrast to Rosignol Butchery whose staff was seen cleaning in front of their premises very early on the morning of the 24th.
It made me wonder why business ventures are not more integrally involved in the post mash cleanup. I am absolutely certain that business entities made millions in revenue because of the Mashramani activities. Can’t they ensure that their area is cleaned?
I also recall that Mashramani activities held under the coalition government had a cleanup company moving behind the floats. So by the morning of the following day the entire area used for the celebratory activities were spic and span.
The organisers should be cognisant of the fact that Mashramani isn’t only about the actual activities of the day but the post clean up. Remember that this is a major national event and oil has propelled us into the eye of the international community. So we should be doing everything to ensure we portray our country in the most positive light.
Sincerely,
M. Allicock
