A motorcyclist and his pillion rider died on Tuesday after the rider lost control of the bike and collided with a car along the Number 79 Public Road around 10.30 pm.
Dead are Devindra Sampal Lakhraj, also known as ‘Lil boy’, 30, of Lot 82 Rahaman Street Corriverton, and Ronny Persaud, of Lot 53 Race Course Springlands, Corriverton.
According to information gathered, Naresh Roopchand of Number 77 Housing Scheme was driving motor car, HC 7188, with passenger Mary Devair, 39, of Lot 1 Grant 1805 Crabwood Creek, when it is alleged that the motorcycle which was being ridden by Lakhraj at a fast rate collided with the front portion of the motor car.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist and pillion rider were flung onto the roadway, sustaining injuries to their heads and bodies. They were rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital along with the driver and passenger of the motor car.
The two were pronounced dead on arrival while the driver and passenger were transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
As of yesterday afternoon, the passenger remained hospitalized with head injuries, while the driver is in police custody for questioning.
According to the police, neither of the deceased was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident.
Lakhraj’s wife, Alfazeema Ally yesterday told Stabroek News, that she last saw her husband around 5 pm on Tuesday when he visited her at her place of employment. She said, around 9 pm he phoned her to enquire what time she would finish working and she informed him it would be around 10.30 pm.
However, once she had finished working she was unable to make contact with Lakhraj and was shortly after informed that he was involved in an accident. “And when we go at the hospital them say that he die”, the emotional woman relayed yesterday. She said she was able to see him at the hospital and noticed major injuries about his body.
Meanwhile, Persaud’s mother, Ramkumri Persaud, relayed that she last saw her son around 5.30 pm on Tuesday. She said after he returned from work he showered and told her that he was heading out to visit Lakhraj and when he returned he would have dinner.
According to her, Persaud said they were heading out to the pre Phagwah celebrations which were being held at the Sukhpaul’s Gas Station in Skeldon.
“And he never come back… Me get three sons and last August me bury one and now we got to bury one nother one, me don’t know how me will ever make this”, the mother said.
The two families described the men as helpful and hard workers who were both friendly to people within their communities.
