Fire victim, 64-year-old Gavin Joseph of Riverview Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who is unable to walk properly, received a four wheel rollator walker on Tuesday from ranks of the Ruimveldt Police Station through the Men on a Mission (MOM) initiative to assist him in moving around.

The walker, which also has a seat and removable back support was given to Joseph who is diagnosed with an underlying illness which restricts some of his movements and as such finds it difficult to move around and do his daily chores.

Present at the handing over were Deputy Superintendent R. Das, who is the Officer in Charge of #2 Sub-Division, Sergeant Griffith and Sanjay Persaud, Chairman of Ruimveldt Station Management Committee, who all pledged to support Joseph in more needed areas.

To add to his misfortunes, Joseph is also a victim of fire after his home which was in an apartment complex at Lot ‘C’ Riverview, Ruimveldt, was gutted by fire on January 2 leaving him (he was the landlord) and all his tenants homeless.

The Guyana Fire service had stated that the cause of the fire was a child who was left unattended and playing with matches which came in contact with combustible materials and ignited.

At the scene of the fire, Joseph had spoken to this newspaper, said that he was about to do his laundry when he heard screams that there was a fire.  “I been downstairs in the yard going to wash now and then I hear somebody hollering ‘Fire! Fire!’ and I then I see the big smoke and I seh ‘Is wuh really going on upstairs deh’ and I see the house catching a fire… it had a little girl but they manage to get she out… I never get to save nothing, nothing, nothing…” He had also revealed that his property was not insured. The man is currently staying with relatives at another house in Riverview.
