A security guard is feared drowned after he accidently slipped into the Demerara River early yesterday morning while performing guard duties on a vessel.
Reports are that around 4:00hrs, 27 year-old Zephyr Stanislaw who was employed by the GEB security firm was on main duty inside the vessel named “Demerara”. Another security guard from the said firm told police that he saw the man fell into the river and began to experience difficulties. An effort was made to pull him out but he had already slipped beneath the water’s surface.
Stanislaw of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was stationed at the Guyana Rubis Incorporated, located at Providence, East Bank Demerara. In an interview with Stabroek News, the CEO of GEB, Maurice Amres, said that he is unsure as to why the man was on the vessel at that time and there was no ladder for him to climb down from. Meanwhile, a staff member said that this was Stanislaw’s first day back on duty and he was assigned to work on the vessel because he had worked on the vessel before. He also noted that the circumstances behind the incident is unclear.
Stanislaw had previously worked with GEB but had left the firm to work in the interior. He returned to the firm and was placed on duty on early yesterday morning. An employee, Vibert Scarce, told Sta-broek News that Stanislaw can swim very well and before he left the security firm, he worked in its marine section. The police and the Coast Guard are currently conducting a search operation for the missing man and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
