Construction of the new Guyana Fire Service (GFS) headquarters on Home Stretch Avenue in Georgetown is almost complete, according to the contractor, Mohamed’s Enterprise, during the Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham’s site visit to assess the progress of works.
A GFS release yesterday informed that Wickham, along with engineers, contractors and other senior officers of the GFS, conducted a walkthrough exercise at the site of the new GFS headquarters currently under construction. Lead engineer, Parmesh Parsotam, told the visiting group said that building is 95 per cent completed and should be handed over by the end of the month.
Back in July of last year, Wickham had reported that some 70 per cent of the construction had been completed and that works were expected to conclude in February this year.
The Ministry of Home Affairs in January 2022 had unveiled a plan for the construction of the new headquarters, to be built west of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue and next to the proposed Guyana Football Federation complex.
A decision has not yet been announced as to what will be done with the building which currently houses the GFS headquarters in the congested Stabroek Market Square. The heavy traffic very often negatively affects the fire service’s response time much to the ire of fire victims.
The project was pegged at $648 million.
