One person feared drowned following boat mishap in Bonasika Creek

One man is missing while two were rescued following a boat mishap on Saturday in the Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River.

The missing man was identified only as Chino, 17 years old and a farmer of Region One. The rescued passengers are Mark La Cruz, a 24 year old labourer of Upper Bonasika, and Anthonio, a 19 year old farmer of Region One. A police report quoted La Cruz who said that at approximately 21:00 hrs he and the two other passengers were consuming alcohol in his paddle-boat heading to their Bonasika home when one of the teenage occupants started to rock the boat. Shortly after, the boat capsized throwing all three into the creek.

La Cruz and Anthonio managed to swim to shore, but Chino disappeared below the creek water. They were rescued by residents in the area and a report was made at the Bonasika Police Outpost at around 09:00 hours Sunday morning. Checks were made in the creek for Chino but his body was not found. La Cruz and Anthonio are in custody, assisting police in their investigations. Region Three Commander, Mahendra Siwnarine, told Stabroek News on Sunday that a search operation is currently ongoing to locate the remains of Chino.
