Jamual John continues to add to his palmares.
The star cyclist took his talents to the ‘Gateway to the Interior’ yesterday and rode off with the spoils of the ‘One Guyana’ Bartica Cycling Classic.Staged around the avenues of the Region 7 town, John won the second edition of the event, besting a quality field which comprised the cream of the nation’s wheelsmen.
The 25 year-old led Curtis Dey and junior standout, Aaron Newton onto the podium for the race which was staged for an hour plus two laps.
Christopher Griffith, Sherwin Sampson and Arjune Sookhai completed the top six rewarding positions for the fixture which attracted in excess of 20 starters.Briton John who won the last edition of the race, was in contention for a second place finish but was disqualified for an infringement of the rule soon after suffering a mechanical problem.
Newton also pocketed the best junior trophy, leading Alex Leung and Sebastian Nathan for the event which was organized by the United We Stand Cycle Club and the Bartica Mayor and Town Council. Robin Persaud and Ian Jackson were the top veterans in the Under-50 and Over-50 categories respectively.
On the distaff side, Clavecia Spencer rode in first to claim the winner’s trophy ahead of Sandia Noel and Raziha Robinson.
In the juvenile category, Terrel Noel was first followed by Jerome Ghanie and Joshua Farley.
This year’s event was sponsored by the Trophy Stall, the National Sports Commission, Fazia’s Collection, Industrial Safety Supplies, Burrowes Construction Inc and others.
