Dear Editor,
The horrific accident at Greenwich Park which claimed four lives defines the continued madness on the roadways. In a news report on the accident the lorry driver is claiming that a motor car ahead of him traveling in the same direction, made a sudden stop at the pedestrian crossing. On seeing this the lorry driver applied brakes and swerved right to avoid colliding with motor car, in so doing the lorry collided with the minibus traveling in the opposite direction (SN March 6). From this account the motor car ahead of the lorry had a right to stop at the pedestrian crossing. The ‘sudden stop’, it can be deduced, could only mean the lorry was traveling close behind the motor car and perhaps at a fast rate and so had to swerve to avoid a collision. In swerving the lorry ran into the path of the oncoming minibus.
Now innocent persons have lost their lives and others injured. Road carnage continues unabated in our dear country and is the singular most troubling and worrying daily occurrence on our roadways.
My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and a full and speedy recovery to those injured and affected by this tragedy.
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
