An East Coast Demerara man was remanded to prison after he was read two charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The defendant, 30-year-old Marlon Dindiyal-Martin, of Lot 276 Foulis, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the two charges which alleged that on March 4 at Republic and Garnett streets, Newtown, Kitty, without a firearm licence being in force at the time, he had in his possession a 7.62mm CZ pistol. He also had at the time, six live rounds of 7.62 ammunition for which he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
The court heard that a police mobile patrol had gone to Republic and Garnett streets at about 16.45 hours after receiving information about a firearm.
They located the accused and during a search of his person, discovered the firearm and ammunition in the crotch of his pants. He was then asked if he was a holder of a firearm licence to which he replied in the negative. As such, he was informed of the crime committed, arrested and escorted to the Kitty Police Station along with the items which were lodged.
After listening to the prosecutor, the magistrate remanded the man to prison and adjourned the matter until March 29.
