I stood up for my rights

Dear Editor,

I wish to respond to assertions in other parts of the media that I behaved disorderly while I was detained by the Police. May I state here and now, I will not allow the Police, or anyone else for that matter, to bully me into silence. I am a grown man with grandchildren, and any person, irrespective of rank, cannot, and must not talk to me as if I am a child. The Police have got to learn to be respectful to citizens, irrespective of their circumstances. For far too long, Guyanese have allowed the Police to erode their rights. This has got to stop, and stop it will.

I stood up for my rights; and if that is disorderly behaviour, then I will be disorderly all the time. While citizens’ rights are being eroded, the so-called Guardians of Democracy, who were so vociferous and visible during the 2020 elections season, are now deafeningly silent. Some have turned armadillo, while the others have adopted the ostrichian posture. I therefore challenge these guardians to issue a definitive statement on the current state of affairs in Guyana. If they do not do that, then forever, they must remain in their present comatose state.

Sincerely,

Carl Parker

Defender of Democracy
