Seventy-one-year-old Stella Parhoo, one of the persons involved in the gruesome Greenwich Park accident on the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE), succumbed to her injuries on Friday afternoon taking the death toll from the accident to five.
According to the Cor-porate Communications Unit of the Guyana Police Force, Parhoo of Parika, EBE, died at about 3.30 pm while she was undergoing treatment for her injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Her body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary waiting a post-mortem examination.
The woman’s grandson, Navindra Ramcharran, who spoke with the Sunday Stabroek yesterday said that his grandmother had sustained a broken shoulder, a broken pelvis, a broken nose bridge, and a fractured skull, amongst other injuries.
He also explained that after the accident which occurred on Monday and involved a lorry and the minibus that Parhoo was in at the time, the woman was taken by ambulance to the West Demerara Hospital and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hos-pital (GPH) where she eventually regained consciousness and underwent a CT scan which showed the fractured skull.
However, on Tuesday he said that his grandmother was taken back to the West Demerara Hospital where she was placed on life support and was being given saline for most of the time. Ramcharran added that while there, she eventually lost consciousness once more and as a result was rushed back to the GPH on Wednesday where she remained in the same condition until Friday when she passed away.
An additional charge of causing death by dangerous driving is likely to be brought against the driver of lorry, GZZ 2285, 38-year-old Ewart Stewart, who was on Thursday slapped with four counts of the aforementioned offence at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where he was remanded to prison.
According to the police, the accident had occurred at about 9.30 am on Monday along the Green-wich Public Road and involved the motor lorry and minibus BWW 8364 which was being driven by the now deceased driver, Vernon Prowell.
It was reported that the lorry was proceeding east along the northern side of the Greenwich Park public road at a fast rate and was approaching a pedestrian crossing while the minibus was proceeding in the opposite direction.
The police had said that the driver of the lorry claimed that a black motorcar, HD 1708 was proceeding in front of him when it made a sudden stop at the pedestrian crossing. The lorry driver said that he responded by applying the brakes and swerving right to avoid colliding with the motorcar which was in front of him but this resulted in him colliding with the right-side front portion of minibus.
As a result of the collision, minibus passengers: Margaret Kennedy, a 72-year-old female of Tus-chen; Olga Reddy, a 57-year-old female of Parika; and Elvis Charles, a 40-year-old male of Ruby, EBE; received injuries about their bodies and were escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where they all died while receiving medical treatment.
Prowell, and other passengers including Parhoo were examined by a doctor and transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for treatment. Prowell was later transferred to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
