Slingerz FC and Den Amstel earned their semi-final berths in the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) ‘Commander Cup’, following contrasting victories on Friday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
The combination of Sheldon Holder and Delon Lanferman recorded respective doubles as Slingerz FC dismissed Eagles 4-0.
Holder opened the scoring for the Vergenoegen-based outfit in the 15th minute. Initiating a one-two pass combination with Halley outside the 18-yard box, Holder slammed his effort past the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area.
Holder would make his presence felt once more in the 32nd minute to ensure his side carried a 2-0 advantage heading into the halftime interval. The conversion was fortuitous as an initial strike was parried by the goalkeeper into the path of Holder, who slotted home.
Lanferman then took over the scoring burden in the second half, opening his account in the 54th minute. Racing onto a through pass, Lanferman dribbled the onrushing goalkeeper and finished into the back of the net.
The outcome was then sealed in the 80th minute when Lanferman completed his brace, receiving a flat cross from the left side of the field, and then slotting past the goalkeeper from inside the 18-yard box. Meanwhile, Den Amstel overcame Uitvlugt Warriors 3-1 in extra time. Three unanswered goals settled the outcome in favour of Den Amstel after they initially fell behind to a 10th minute conversion from Casper Evans.
The equaliser emanated from the boot of Kelon Nelson in the 70th minute whilst Ryan Lewis pushed Den Amstel ahead in the 99th minute.
The come-from-behind win was sealed in the 105th minute when Manuel Morris found the back of the net.
The tournament continues today with another doubleheader at the same venue. Pouderoyen will oppose No. #1 All-Stars in the opening match at 18:30hrs while Crane will take aim at Region #3 Police in the main event at 20:30hrs.
