Half centuries from Shamar Yearwood and Ronaldo Alimohamed highlighted Demerara’s innings on the opening day of their second-round showdown in the Guyana Cricket Board senior four-day Inter-County tournament against the Select XI at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda ground, yesterday.
The Select XI won the toss and inserted Demerara who piled on 360 for eight at stumps after 90 overs.
Demerara lost Navindra Persaud cheaply but Raymond Perez (35) teamed up with Sachin Singh (17) to put on 51 runs for the second wicket. However, two quick strikes saw the hosts reduced to 58 for three and the loss of their captain, Christopher Barnwell (10) further emphasized their woes at 80 for four.
Alimohamed then came to the crease and duly muscled his way to 94 from 62 balls. His innings featured nine sixes and six fours and he added 89 runs for the fifth wicket with Akshaya Persaud. Persaud supported with 40 from 61 balls with his innings laced with four sixes and one four before falling to left-arm spinner, Kelvin Umroa.
Yearwood then joined Alimohamed to put on 77 runs for the sixth wicket. Yearwood played a vital innings that showed his temperament as he soaked up 153 balls and struck four sixes and five fours during his u beaten 94. When Alimohamed was dismissed by off-spinner, Jonathan Rampersaud, Richie Looknauth (10) and Yearwood shared in a 54-run partnership.
Demerara Cricket Club’s Ashmead Nedd came to the crease at the fall of Looknauth and made 25 before being stumped off of Shane Wong. Steven Sankar is at the crease unbeaten on 11. Wong, Demetri Cameron, Rampersaud and Umroa all picked up two wickets each.
