The dynamic duo claimed the marquee senior trophies when the Jefford Classic Mile was staged yesterday inside the National Park.
Barrington, a specialist in the 800m, stopped the clock in 4:20.80s, kicking clear in the final 200m to win the inaugural event ahead of Marlon Nicholson (4:23.80s) and Cleveland Thomas (4:26.50s) who joined him on the podium.
In perfect conditions for racing, Winston Missigher (4:30.10s) and Ronnel Newton (4:33.90s) completed the top five positions.
Harvey, warmed up nicely for the upcoming CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas, adding another winner’s trophy to her burgeoning collection.
The middle distance maestro, led wire-to-wire and crossed the line in 5:31.04s, winning by more than 200m.
Jelesa Wright and Delicia Tinnis ran in second and third in that order.
Teen standouts, Odida Parkinson (Boys U-20), Tianna Springer (Girls U-20), Javon Roberts (Boys U-18) , Esther McKinnon (Girls U-14) and Ebo McNeil (Boys U-14) were also winners in their respective categories.
In excess of 200 athletes registered for the event organized by
Jefford, told the media that the event was a massive success and the winners in each the respective categories “have the right to be called the best one milers in Guyana.”
Up for grabs was $50,000 for the winners while the second and third place finishers pocketed $30,000 and $20,000 each. There were also training grants, educational grants, vouchers, hampers and medals rewarded.
The event garnered corporate support from MVP Sports, MediPharm, VSH United Guyana Inc., Annie’s Snackette, Cedric Imports and others.
