Demerara are currently in a commanding position with a 345-run lead over the Select XI in the Guyana Cricket Board’s senior Inter-County four-day tournament’s second round.
Resuming yesterday on 360 for eight, Demerara converted their first innings total to 419 all out in 101.5 overs before bowling out the Select XI for 166 in 46.5 overs. Demerara then reached 92 for four after 25 overs at stumps in their second innings at Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda.
Shamar Yearwood registered his first ton at this level, moving from his overnight score of 94 to 105 from 174 balls. He struck four sixes and seven fours during his over three-hour innings before he was caught by Rajendra Chandrika at first slip off of Carlos La Rose.
Yearwood had forged a 55-run stand for the ninth wicket with Steven Sankar who resumed on 11 and went on to reach 46 not out from 54 balls. He struck six fours and one six. Qumar Torrington chipped in with 13 before handing off-spinner, Jonathan Rampersaud, his third wicket. Kevin Umroa, Shane Wong and Demetri Cameron bagged one wicket a piece.
Ashmead Nedd then stifled the Select XI’s innings with impressive figures of 5-44. Umroa, batting at number 10, top scored with 33 from 42 balls, his innings featuring five boundaries. He added 44 for the ninth wicket with Rampersaud who made 18 before being trapped leg before wicket by Sankar.
Chandrika (28), La Rose (21), Alvin Mohabir (20) and Jeremiah Scott (10) were the only batsmen to reach double figures but none of them were able to convert their starts.
Nedd was supported by off-spinner, Richie Looknauth with 3-50 while Sankar and Torrington picked up one wicket each.
Demerara were reduced to 33 for four in their second innings as Cameron and La Rose removed the top order for single-figure scores. However, Christopher Barnwell teamed up with Akshaya Persaud to share in an unbroken 59-run partnership. Barnwell is on 36 not out from 53 balls, hitting four fours and a six while Persaud faced 56 balls for his unbeaten 25. He struck three boundaries.
