A 23-year-old Soesdyke teacher yesterday found herself in hot water when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where sentencing was deferred after she pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny committed on her ex-boyfriend.
The charge which was brought against Nickacia Sobers of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD), states that on December 20th, 2022 at Avenue of the Republic, she stole $467,000 in cash from Richard Brathwaite.
During the proceedings yesterday, the court heard that Sobers and Brathwaite were involved in a relationship which ended on the day the young woman stole the man’s money. It was stated that Brathwaite operates a shoe stall at the corner of Avenue of the Republic and Robb Street and during their time together Sobers would frequently visit his stall.
On the day in question, the man said that he tucked away the sum of $467,000 in his motorcar which was parked and secured at the front of his stall. A few hours later Sobers then visited him at the stall and he allowed her to enter the car where she spent some time sitting alone. Sometime after, Brathwaite got into his vehicle and proceeded to the Timehri bus park where he dropped off the young woman and then went back to his stall. When he arrived there he made checks for his money and discovered that it was missing which prompted him to report the matter to the Brickdam Police Station.
A few days later Sobers was arrested and escorted to the police station where she was interviewed and admitted to stealing the man’s money from his car.
Brathwaite told the court that during the initial stages of the investigation the defendant had promised to repay him his money under the procedure of a Justice of Peace but whenever he tried to contact her, she would never answer her phone.
Asked by the Magistrate why she committed the act and why she did not repay the man, Sobers in reply said that she had outstanding debts, and when she went into the back seat of the car to collect her stuff she saw the money and took it.
She added that she currently has the sum of $200,000 at home to repay the man but he has since refused to collect the money in portions.
The magistrate then remanded Sobers to prison and deferred sentencing until her next court date which is set for Friday, March 17.
