The Ministry of Education (MoE) is stating categorically, that contrary to reports in some sections of the media, the Christ Church Secondary School will be rebuilt with funding from the Government of Guyana. This statement was in response to an erroneous report alleging, “Oil company donates $4M to help rebuild Christ Church.”
The school construction is expected to be completed in January 2024. An invitation for bids was published in Kaieteur News on January 28. The tender for the design and construction of the school was opened on February 16 by the National Pro-curement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).
The press release, the MoE explained that the financial donation made by the CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited (CPGL) will be used to replace items and materials lost due to the destruction of the school by fire.
A fire gutted Christ Church Secondary on January 12. The school had catered for 502 students, 39 teachers, and 9 ancillary staff. The students and teachers have been temporarily relocated to the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) for class sessions.
The Guyana Fire Service after its investigation had concluded that the fire was act of arson and had several points of origin.
