What was described as an abusive relationship by many ended in death yesterday when 23-year-old Eason Hamilton was fatally stabbed by his reputed wife who he was at the time trying to prevent from leaving his house. She has since been placed in custody.
According to reports, Hamilton, of Lot 57 Fourth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was fatally stabbed by the 20-year-old with whom he shared a common-law relationship with for a number of years. The stabbing occurred at about 6.30 am yesterday.
At the scene yesterday, the wife’s attorney, Suzanne Bullen, told Stabroek News that her client birthed three children for the now dead man who she alleged was abusive to the young mother. According to Bullen, the wife recently took out a restraining order against Hamilton and had gone to live at her mother after he had abused her. However, the man kept calling the woman’s phone pleading with her to go back to live with him, which she ended up doing.
“…They have been together for about six years, she has three children for him, ages four and the twins are two years old. This was a very abusive relationship from the inception, she recently got a restraining order against him. The restraining order was when he had damaged her eye… he had broken her jaw before as well.”
“She had left but he kept calling her and so she decided to go back there, he’s a very insecure person, he would always accuse her of being unfaithful to him so I guess she had just wanted to prove that she was not on the road with somebody else as he would think so she went back,” the lawyer explained.
Bullen went on to say that the accused was at her mother’s house the entire Friday but had left to return to the man’s premises that afternoon when an argument ensued between them. During the same afternoon it was said that the young woman attempted to leave but Hamilton kept holding onto her bag preventing her from doing so which resulted in her sleeping there that night.
However, the next morning, a second argument erupted between the couple and as the woman attempted to leave once more, Hamilton prevented her which prompted her to stab the man in his abdomen. “They had a fight this morning [Saturday morning] about her leaving, it was like he was telling her to leave but when she tried to leave he didn’t want her to leave so he kept preventing her from leaving and that’s when the incident happened.”
It was reported that Hamilton died later that morning while undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital for the stab wound he sustained in his abdomen.
One of Hamilton’s aunts who lives in the premises behind him said that the couple constantly had arguments and also described their relationship as abusive. According to the woman, “the incident happened like around six this morning or just after seven, I live at the back of them so I heard that they had some issue and he slapped her and when he slapped her she stabbed him with a knife… but I know it was a very abusive relationship.”
She added “…I heard the commotion and so when I came out I saw persons bringing he down the stairs and then they brought him outside and put him on the ground, so when I peep over I saw he was laying and crying out for pain.”
The wife is presently in police custody assisting with further investigations.
