Lewis puts Scorpions out of misery with first ball

Fast bowler Shermon Lewis

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Windward Islands Volcanoes needed a single delivery to wrap up a comprehensive 181-run victory over Jamaica Scorpions on yesterday’s final day of their third round West Indies Championship contest.

With victory all but assured after reducing Scorpions to 233 for nine in their second innings at the close of Friday’s penultimate day at the Guyana National Stadium, fast bowler Shermon Lewis bowled number 10 Nicholson Gordon without scoring with the day’s first delivery to end the game.

The 27-year-old Lewis, who played two Tests for West Indies five years ago, finished with five for 22 to complete a fine return to first first-class action after playing his last game eight months ago.

He finished with match figures of seven for 51.

It was Lewis who had instigated Scorpions’ collapse early Friday after they started the day in pursuit of a massive 415 for victory.

The right-armer grabbed two of the first four wickets to tumble at 68 for four after lunch, before returning to make important strikes which hurt the lower order and undermined Scorpions’ resistance.

Volcanoes will now travel to Trinidad to face Leeward Islands Hurricanes in round four bowling off next Wednesday while Scorpions remain in Georgetown to take on Guyana Harpy Eagles.
