The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has set one of its lowest production targets in years, despite significant investments in the sector.
Sources within the industry indicated that the target for the 2023 first crop has been set at 16,000 tonnes. Last year’s first crop, it should be noted, had a production target of 20,261 metric tonnes, but the corporation only managed to produce 13,076 metric tonnes of sugar. While this probably has bearing on the lower target set this year, critics have said it was concerning and places the corporation in the spotlight regarding the challenges it faces.
