Following continuous rainfall across Georgetown yesterday, a section of the Main Street Avenue from Middle Street to Church Street was flooded.
Engineers attached to the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) visited the location to conduct an assessment and discovered that a tunnel located beneath the roadway from Main Street to Church Street was blocked.
As a result, the drainage authority intervened by deploying resources and commenced clearing the tunnel to mitigate flooding, an activity that should’ve been undertaken by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, the NDIA said in a release. These efforts will continue in the coming days.
The release said that it should be noted that the maintenance of this system is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown but given the urgency and severity of the situation, the NDIA will undertake works to bring relief to affected residents of Georgetown.
