Godfrey Munroe ascended to the presidency of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) by a landslide yesterday when the body held its Electoral General Meeting (EGM) at Olympic House.
Munroe defeated fellow presidential nominee and head of the Guyana Baseball League, Robin Singh, 31-4 in the race for the top post of one of the nation’s most important institutions.
Munroe, who was the sitting Vice President of the association since 2016, takes over the reigns from Kalam Juman-Yassin who was at the helm for the better part of the last three decades.
The 49-year-old, who is also the President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, will lead the GOA until the next EGM is held in 2025.
During yesterday’s Meeting, Director of Sport and President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, head of the Guyana Tennis Association, Cristy Campbell and Philip Fernandes, head of the hockey board, were elected to serve as the three Vice Presidents.
The trio was elected unopposed after four-time Olympian, USA based, Aliann Pompey, was deemed ineligible to contest the election deemed ineligible to contest due to article 14.4.1 “being a national of Guyana and ordinarily resident in Guyana”)
After two rounds of voting, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon was elected Secretary General, 18-15 versus Dr. Karen Pilgrim, one of the former VPs of the association. In the initial round, the voters voted 14, 11, 10 in favour of Persaud-McKinnon, Dr. Pilgrim and Keavon Bess. There were two spoiled votes in the final round.
For the post of Assistant Secretary, Emelia Ramdhani was elected with 22 votes, Latoya Herbert got seven. Deion Nurse who was the sitting Assistant Secretary, finished with six.
Garfield Wiltshire was returned unopposed as Treasurer, while Michael Singh was elected Assistant Treasurer 21-14 versus Nurse. Attorney-at-Law, Emily Dodson was the Returning Officer.
