Two of the men who were recently nabbed in Toroparu Backdam in Region Seven allegedly with unlicensed firearms and ammunition by ranks of the Guyana Police Force were yesterday charged and remanded to prison.
Kelon Reynolds, 29, of Lot 711 Block 22, Wismar, Linden; and Ramuel Shemar Garraway, 20, of Grant Unity, Essequibo River, both made their appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Crystal Lambert who read separate charges to them.
According to the police, Reynolds was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition without being the holder of a licence. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. Garraway was also charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without being the holder of a licence. He also pleaded not guilty to both charges and they both were remanded to prison.
The men are expected to make their next court appearance on April 18 when the matters will be called again.
The police release stated that their ranks had conducted a search on a shop which was owned by a 38-year-old businesswoman and a 40-year-old man, in the Toroparu backdam on Monday acting on information that they had received. During the search they found a semi-automatic gun along with eleven 9mm rounds of ammunition a short distance away from the shop.
According to the police, at the time of the search, the 38-year-old businesswoman and Reynolds, who is her brother-in-law, were questioned and he admitted ownership of the two items. As such he was arrested and cautioned.
However, as the ranks were proceeding out of the backdam, they observed Garraway who had in his possession a 12-gauge shotgun with two matching cartridges. The young man was subsequently apprehended and questioned and under caution he claimed that the firearm belonged to his boss, the aforementioned 40-year-old man who was the owner of the shop at Toroparu.
The men were then escorted to the Enachu Police Station where they were placed in custody.
