Guyana’s Ministry of Health was the recipient on Monday of a donation of Pfizer vaccines from the Government of Spain.
A release from the Ministry of Health said that the vaccines was received by Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Narine Singh. The vaccines were sourced through the COVAX mechanism.
The Ministry of Health said that the donation comprised 4,800 doses of the paediatric Pfizer vaccine for administration to children between the ages of 5 and 11 and 8,640 doses for adults 18 years and over.
Spain’s non-resident Ambassador, Fernando Nogales, said, “This is the second time I have come to Guyana in regards to vaccine donation and it makes me very happy and very proud because Spain turns out to be the second largest vaccine donor in the region, this would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the visionary policy of Guyana, and despite of all the misinformation, made a huge effort to underline how important vaccination is.”
PAHO’s Resident Representative, Luis Codina, said, “Through the COVAX mechanism we received this donation from the Government of Spain, paediatric vaccine was sent prior and now bivalent that may be the future vaccination for COVID-19 in the next years. This may be the future of the yearly vaccine depending on the Omicron’s behaviour in (the) next years.”
The CMO expressed the gratitude of the Ministry of Health for the donation in his remarks.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Health I would like to thank the Government of Spain for this donation that was received, it came at a very opportune time when we were presently out of stock and even though we are at the end of the COVID pandemic we still do vaccination because the vaccination is one of the most important tools in prevention of severe mortality of COVID and I also would like to thank PAHO for facilitating this operation”, he said.
